This small craft brewery, located in the old coach house next to our sister pub The Duke of Cambridge in Tilford, is the brainchild of Mark Collins and Paul Griffiths, who are part of our Red Mist Leisure team and both share a passion and wealth of experience in brewing and hospitality.
Paul joined Red Mist Leisure in November 2009 and is now Operations Manager across the group, as well as Director of The Temple Inn; you may have seen him around the pub on occasions or at the Liss Forest Village Fete, where he was running the bar.
Mark grew up in pubs owned by his parents, so from a young age he had a passion for cooking as well as developing a love for great beer in his teenage years! He started with Red Mist Leisure as a chef at The Stag on the River, before becoming a central chef across all our Red Mist pubs, which lead him to The Duke of Cambridge.
On a cold winters evening in 2016, the pair were toiling away in the old coach house at The Duke, with a half-barrel test kit that they had put together. Despite having to store it in an airing cupboard to ferment due to the cold, the beer they created received positive feedback and praise and so this is when they decided to turn the coach house into a commercial microbrewery.
Fast forward to today and the pair have just celebrated their 100th brew! We caught up with Mark and Paul about the journey of Tilford brewery so far…
Tilford Brewery is now an award-winning local brewery supplying all of the pubs in the Red Mist family and regularly appearing at beer festivals and special events around Surrey and Hampshire.
As well as regularly brewing Red Mist Ale, a popular beer on our draught selection at The Temple which donates 20p per pint sold to charity, Mark and Paul have created award-winning seasonal ales and collaborated with Farnham Hoppers and most recently, Head Brewer, Miles, from Hogs Back Brewery.
Collaborating with Miles was an excellent experiment which resulted in a 2.8% golden ale with a wonderfully hoppy kick. This is very limited edition and is being sold at Hogs Back Brewery and directly from Tilford Brewery only.
The brewery is also delighted to have branded glassware and gift packs for sale from the brewery now. Paul comments:
We have come a long way from discussing our dreams of starting a brewery over a pint of someone else’s ale, to seeing our own beers in branded glassware, being enjoyed by customers in pubs. It’s been an incredible journey; we’re very proud of what we have achieved and excited to see where else we can go. Watch this space!
As we step into autumn, Mark and Paul are busy planning their festive ale and looking forward to taking part in more food and beer festivals. You can see them at the brewery most weekends or at one of the following events:
- Ascot Beer festival – Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October
- Aldershot Beer festival – Friday 5th and Saturday 6th October
- Wellington Country Farm Shop Christmas Fair – Thursday 22nd November
- Danes Hill Christmas Fayre – Saturday 20th November
